AI in STEM education

Robotic Cameras with Artificial Intelligence Capabilities in Croatian Elementary Schools

The AI in STEM Education project (AI = artificial intelligence) addresses the problem of a lack of sufficiently educated teachers and adequate programs in Croatian elementary schools that would encourage children to acquire STEM knowledge and skills.

The project plans to increase capacity and provide support for elementary school teachers in Croatia in the use of robotics and artificial intelligence, thereby enhancing the quality and relevance of education and the overall learning environment in elementary schools.

The “AI in STEM Education” project is funded through the “Local Development and Poverty Reduction” program via the EEA Financial Mechanism, the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, and the Croatian national contribution.

Our partner in this project is the European Wergeland Centre (EWC), a non-profit foundation and resource center for education in intercultural understanding, human rights, and democratic citizenship, focusing on promoting the values of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in and through education.

Through the implementation of project activities, we plan to develop a curriculum on the use of artificial intelligence in STEM education, educate and mentor 300 teachers on the application of artificial intelligence in their work, and involve 60 elementary schools in knowledge exchange activities, practice, and cooperation.

The project implementation period is from June 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023.

The total value of the project and grant funds is 199,814.03 EUR. The amount co-financed by the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms is 169,841.93 EUR, and 29,972.10 EUR is allocated from national funds.

The project is financed through the “Local Development and Poverty Reduction” – English “Local Development and Poverty Reduction” (LDPR) program with the main goal of strengthening economic and social cohesion in the Republic of Croatia, which is also one of the key goals of the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

An effective education system forms the basis of a country’s economic and social development, so the purpose of the program is to strengthen elementary education in the following areas: STEM, ICT, entrepreneurship, active citizenship.
